Bir baba nasihati

Evlâdım,

Şiir gibi bir vasiyet yazamadım sana

İhtiyar bir kartal gibiyim,

çıkmıyor gagamdan kasvetli göklerde seda

Gelgelelim,

göçmeden evvel bir tavsiyem var

Sanırım, şöylesi uygundur bugüne:

Birincisi, iyimser olacaksın;

aynen sadakatli ve şen

bir hizmetçi gibi ama akıllı;

yani, bırakacaksın

ötekilere her tür iddiayı ve kurnazlığı.

İkincisi, âlicenap olacaksın;

fakat, bunun hayaline dalıp

bütün gün uzun uzadıya

vakit harcama!

Velhasıl, bu yolda icat et kendini;

yani buradaki dünyevi yaşantını,

gelmekte olan ecel gününü,

ve, o engin daimi zamanın bestelediği

muhteşem ve lezzetli inanç dolu şarkıyı.

A FATHER'S ADVICE

My child,

I couldn't write you a personal will, like a poem

I'm like an old eagle

No sound comes out of my beak in the gloomy skies

However, I have an advice before I migrate

I think this is appropriate for the day:

First, you should be optimistic;

just as well, be loyal and cheerful

just like a servant but a smart one;

so, this way you will let go

all kinds of pretensions and cunning to others

Secondly, you should be magnanimous;

But, daydreaming about it

all day long,

don't waste your time!

In short, invent yourself along the following path;

that is, own up to your earthly life here,

prepare for the oncoming day of death,

and composed by that vast perpetual time,

have a magnificent and delicious faith-filled song,

that is always ready to uplift and cheer your soul.
